The beauty of Twitter is its (arguably) simple, rarely-changing format and purpose. As its user base grows, and as businesses begin to catch on to the growing necessity of marketing through Social Media, Twitter stays the same, adding only the most minuscule tweaks of improvement from time to time. Twitter’s admirable resistance to change (imagined mostly in the form of blatant advertising) has also, consequentially, dictated Twitter’s challenge in monetizing itself. Read more
The Trouble with Accessibility
Last Week, Erin Fetherston, creative consultant and guest designer for Juicy Couture, logged into StyleList’s Twitter account. A real-time fashion conversation was the intent, as Fetherston was to answer questions posed by followers using the hashtag #erinfetherstonqa. Among the questions directed at Fetherston were “How do you plan on adapting your whimsical storybook style to cater to the Juicy brand,” and “Uggs, are they way out or still ok?” Though 46,294 Twitter users attempted to communicate with the designer, Fetherston managed to answer only 22 questions.
There is no denying that social media is a technological boon, but there is also the ever-present problem of that it is a network comprised of humans. And the speed and productivity of a single human cannot compete with the behavior of an online platform, or even an army of Twitter followers. Read more
