Dysfashional Berlin Opening

Dysfashional Opening Bodies in Motion

Last night, less than two weeks before the start of Berlin Fashion Week, designers, journalists and creatives came together for a fashionable warm-up: the opening of the exhibition Dysfashional at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Berlin’s major Klaus Wowereit and French Ambassador Bernard de Montferrand opened the event with an official speech, followed by an original performance by ESMOD students entitled Bodies in Motion. Among the hustle and bustle of the evening, TribaSpace managed to grab participating artist Michael Sontag for a few minutes to find out more about his involvement in the exhibition and the concept behind his piece, The Dressing Table.

Following his studies in Berlin and Paris, Michael lent his skills to the innovative German label c.neeon and more established fashion houses such as Kenzo and Givenchy, before presenting his debut collection in Berlin last summer. Creating solely limited edition pieces in very small quantities, Michael describes his garments as “fashion without constrains“. For Dysfashional he actualized an interactive installation inspired by the act of sitting at a dressing table. The piece invites visitors to observe themselves, to awaken their senses and question the vanity of their own reflection and self-image.

How did you come to participate in the exhibition?

I was already asked to contribute when I was working in Paris. I liked the idea very much. The exhibition dissembles the idea of pure fashion and connects all the disciplines involved – art, crafts, architecture and photography. This is exactly what corresponds to my background. I studied at the Arts School of Weissensee in Berlin, a very inter-disciplinary university.

Where did the inspiration for your piece stem from?

It evolved through thinking about what fashion really is and how it manifests itself in us. I enjoy being able to express myself in all areas of art and design. Taking part in the exhibition was exciting and encouraging for me personally. When I was creating the table I was thinking more like a carpenter than a fashion designer, it was quite an enriching perspective.
