African Designers in Dublin
Stha Ngwenya, the organiser of the first Dublin Africa Fashion Weekend is out to alter our assumptions about Africa. “We are becoming aware of who we are, what it means to be African. We’re growing as a people. We have to change peoples’ perspective of what Africa is.”
Taking place in the Thomas Prior Hall, Dublin over Easter Weekend, Dublin Africa Fashion Weekend will showcase eight vastly varying designers originating from all over the continent including Madagascar, Nigeria and Cameroon. “When people think of African fashion design they think of Safari” or indeed Zebra print fabrics and loud, colourful patterns. Stha wants to make sure people realise there’s more to African fashion than what is expected. Take a closer look at any of the designers presenting their collections and Stha will have proven her point. read more

“It’s clear that we’re in a tough economy. Entering into the fashion industry has never been more difficult than it is right now, and if you’ve been listening to anything Kelly Cutrone has said on her hit TV show, Kell On Earth, even if the industry gets back on track, it will never be what it once was.” (styleite.com)

Highlight: A Shaded View on Fashion Film at Russian Fashion Week
Saturday, the 3rd of April, 2010 – Moscow
Diane Pernet, the ubiquitous fashion observer who has gained renown through her blog, A Shaded View on Fashion, will present the second edition of A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF) at Russian Fashion Week.
ASVOFF is a film festival and competition whose intention is to challenge perceptions of fashion imagery by putting the focus on the moving image rather than the still shot. According to the ASVOFF press release, “the festival is a study in the drama, power and personification that fashion evokes and commands on screen.” Since the premiere of its first edition in September 2008 at the Jeu de Paume National Gallery in Paris, the program of short films has traveled to museums such as the Guggenheim Bilbao and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as to institutions in Tokyo, Seoul, Riga, Mexico City, Vienna, Copenhagen and Amsterdam. On April 30th ASVOFF will be shown at at Hyeres Fashion Festival.
This edition’s jury members include designer Rick Owens, photographer Nan Goldin and actress Maria de Medeiros. The curated program features (among many others) work by Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf, British videographer and music video director Chris Cunningham, and Swedish popstar-turned director Johan Renck. The festival will also showcase works by newcomers such as Benjamin Serroussi, and Camille Vivier.
ASVOFF is now accepting entries for its third edition, which will launch next Fall. More information on ASVOFF submissions is available at www.asvoff.com.
